Course Description: This five-day course is designed for law enforcement professionals who desire to learn how to evaluate, compare and identify friction ridge skin impressions. It would be particularly beneficial for Ten-Print examiners and those preparing to become I.A.I. Certified Ten-Print Examiners. The course will consist of lecture, demonstrations, and extensive hands-on practical comparison exercises. The exercises are designed for various levels of experience in friction ridge examinations.   • The basis for the science of identification by friction ridge impressions and its historical background to include contributions of some of the pioneers in this science, its use in the criminal justice system, important court decisions, and the scientific background concerning dactyloscopy / identification by friction ridges
  • Identifying the eight types of fingerprint patterns according to the Henry System of fingerprint classification and the NCIC and IAFIS classification codes
  • Recognizing the various friction ridge formations and ridge flows found on the fingers and thumbs of the hands
  • Using the ridge flows of the fingers and thumbs to assist in determining what hand and finger may have left the impression
  • Describe the embryonic development of friction ridge skin and how it supports its uniqueness, persistency and value for identification determinations
  • Develop proficiency with the ACE-V Scientific Method to compare and identify friction ridge impressions using all three levels of detail
  • The practical use of fingerprint charts to illustrate an identification to a jury
  • Preparing to testify as an expert in a court of law and formulating responses to challenging questions put to Ten-Print examiners by defense attorneys
  • Develop a professional resume and a list of “qualification questions” and answers to use when testifying as an expert fingerprint witness
  • Demonstrate the procedures to record legible and classifiable fingerprints and Complete Friction Ridge Exemplars suitable for retention
  • Preparation to take the I.A.I. Ten-Print Certification Examination

A three ring binder containing the course material will be provided and fingerprint magnifiers will be loaned to the students.

Certificates of completion will be awarded to those who pass the course.
